The LI STEM Hub recognizes the important role that parents play in helping their child make a career choice. Many parents are not aware of the many growth industries, educational options and career opportunities that are available for their children and are unsure of how to best guide them and help them explore successful careers in high growth industries on Long Island. Eric Middleton and Teri Loughead, in the article “Parental Influence on Career Development,” appearing in an issue of “Journal of Career Development.” Middleton and Loughead say a teen can experience insecurity while trying to figure out the answer to the question of who she is and what she wants to do in life. At this time in her life, parents are the biggest influences.
Recognizing this, the LI STEM Hub will be hosting a regional conference to help parents’ better guide their child in making informed educational and career choices. The LI STEM Hub will have subject matter experts share information and insights at a regional conference on October 24, 2018.
AUDIENCE
Parents/Guardians and their middle through high school age children who have an interest in exploring their areas of interest and how this connects to educational opportunities and successful careers particulary those in Science, Technology, Enginnering, and Math (STEM) on Long Island.
OBJECTIVE
Create a current, engaged and interactive session on October 24, 2018 that provides a starting point for career and educational exploration through the following actions:
APPROACH
Focusing on the sectors that the LI STEM Hub has identified as our critical areas for job growth/opportunity (Healthcare, Engineering, Energy, Manufacturing, Technology /IT, Aviation/Transportation, Life Science), the LI STEM HUB event will guide attendees through the following questions:
FORMAT
Industry focused STEM Talks (8 minutes each) will present a “story” outline including relevant career, educaitonal requrements, salary information, and where to seek the nessecary education.
Expo Session – Education and industry tables highlighting programs and careers will have industry representatives available to talk to students. Colleges will display how the Holland code relates to represented industry majors and jobs.
